There is a serious misconception among today's workforce regarding what Social Security disability actually protects. Social Security disability income is a governmental program that provides monthly benefits for individuals with a substantial work history who become totally disabled from work. If, as a result of an injury, illness, or disease, a worker cannot perform any job that exists in significant numbers in the national economy, and that inability to work has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year, the worker may be entitled to Social Security disability benefits. It is not enough for the worker to prove that he or she cannot do his or her current or last job, the worker must prove an inability to do any job as the result of a physical and/or mental impairment.
