Over 300,000 children in the United States are poisoned by lead from lead based paint annually. 83-86 percent of homes built before 1978 (over 64 million homes nationally) contain lead-based paint. Since 1991, the Centers for Disease Control has emphasized the need to make primary prevention of lead poisoning a high priority for health, housing and environmental agencies at the state, local and federal levels. The approach recommended by the CDC is to remediate all hazards before children are exposed. However, conservative estimates to remediate homes range from $7,500 to $15,000 per home. With high costs of remediation, most of the homes in low income neighborhoods will not be fixed without assistance from governmental agencies or the paint manufacturers. Needless to say, the paint manufacturers don't voluntarily remediate homes and governmental resources are scarce. If you have a child who has been injured as a result of lead-based paint, you should contact an attorney.
