Recently the Food and Drug Administration announced that it would be studying the safety of popular heart stents. The heart stents involved in the study are stents that are coated with medicine that is supposed to prevent arteries from closing again. More than 6 million people have these medicated stents. Doctors now think these stents may raise the risk of life-threatening blood clots that cause strokes if the patient does not remain on blood thinning medication like Plavix.

Two brands of medicated stents are sold in the United States. Taxus is manufactured by Boston Scientific Corporation and Cypher is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson Cordis Corporation. The labels for the stents say that the patients should take baby aspirin and Plavix for a period of time. Research may now indicate that the post-operative treatment is much longer.
