During the first six months of 2007, seventy people died in Richland, Lexington, and Kershaw counties, a statistic that includes eleven more deaths than the same time period last year. Since June, there have been 21 more deaths in the three counties. The highway patrol has decided to get tough and change its attitude.
Highway Patrol Captain Leroy Taylor told a group of troopers and sheriff's deputies that "fatalities are no accident. From this day forward, we need to call them crashes, wrecks of collisions. I don't want to hear anybody talking about an accident no more. Don't give people a way out, don't give them an excuse no more, OK?"
The Midlands is not the only area experiencing an increase in traffic fatalities. Traffic deaths have increased statewide. A new team of officers has been formed to combat the rising fatalities. The newly formed teams will do nothing but concentrate on traffic enforcement.
